The MTL5544 provides fully-floating dc supplies for energising twoconventional 2-wire or 3-wire 4/20mA or ‘smart' transmitters locatedin a hazardous area, and repeats the current in other circuits to drivetwo safe-area loads. For smart transmitters, the unit allows bi-directionaltransmission of digital communication signals superimposed on the4/20mA signal so that the transmitter can be interrogated either fromthe operator station or by a hand-held communicator.

The module is intended for use with thermocouples utilising external cold-junction compensation. A switch enables or disables the safety drive in the event of thermocouple burnout or cable breakage; a second switch permits the selection of upscale or downscale operation as appropriate.
